See the product categories most wanted by Brazilians and get other insights about a market that has already taken to cross-border e-commerce.
It’s been a while since Brazilians took to online purchases in a big way. Proof of this are the successive records broken year after year by the e-commerce sector in Brazil. Since 2010, there hasn’t been a single year without growth in comparison with the 12 previous months. In 2022, Brazilian cross-border e-commerce also showed that it is here to stay: 72% of the Brazilians interviewed by NielsenIQ Ebit for the Webshoppers 47 report said they shopped on international websites at least once last year.
But, after all, what are the best selling products online for Brazilian consumers? How are virtual stores reaching such high sales levels? These are some of the questions we will answer in this article. If you plan to expand your business to Brazil and better understand this public, keep reading to obtain powerful insights.
Analyzing the type of product that most attracted the public’s attention last year can be a way to predict what is worth investing in in the future. In other words, knowing the products that sold well helps businessmen to better understand the consumers in a certain location and choose a niche to start a new e-commerce venture or add categories to an existing store. The following categories registered the highest growth in orders in 2022:
Perfumes and Cosmetics: accounted for 12% of all e-commerce orders, up 22.5% from 2021.
Home and Décor: despite losing 1 percentage point between 2021 and 2022, this category also represented 12% of sales.
Food and Beverages: registering the highest growth among categories (82.8%) between 2021 and 2022, these items represented 11% of online sales.
Health: a 16.9% jump took this category to the fourth place in the ranking of orders, accounting for 9% of the total.
Home appliances: despite declining 6.6% between 2021 and 2022, online sales of home appliances represented 8% of the total.
Fashion & Accessories, Sports & Leisure, Babies & Co., Telephony, IT, Electronics, and Construction & Tools completed the ranking.
Brazilian consumers have never been so enthusiastic about shopping on international websites. The number of Brazilians who purchased online in 2022 totaled over 108 million, growing 24%. The percentage of cross-border e-commerce shoppers in 2022 was 72%. This was the highest percentage since the Webshoppers report started studying the behavior of Brazilian consumers in online commerce, back in 2013.
Even the year 2020, when physical distancing drove e-commerce as a whole, was surpassed by 2022 by 1 percentage point. To have an idea of the expansion of this market, 48% of the Brazilians purchased shopped in cross-border e-commerce in 2017.
Regarding the frequency with which cross-border retail purchases are made, the group that registered the highest growth last year (2021 vs. 2022) is made up of consumers who made more than 10 purchases in international e-commerce stores. The increase was 4%, from 11% in 2021 to 15% in 2022.
You have already noticed that Brazil is an open field for new business possibilities. But to achieve success here, one must go further. It is not enough to know the trends in online purchases and how Brazilian consumers behave. Above all, it is necessary to offer payment methods that are adapted to the local reality. After all, it is not enough to attract new customers without giving them the necessary tools for conversion.
